Island Peak Climbing is a great adventure with an exciting combination of visiting the most popular adventure destination to Everest base camp. Includes climb to the top of scenic Kalapathar rocky ridge, as acclimatization and exercise before the ascent of Island Peak.
 
Himalayan Forever Treks presents this wonderful adventure full of thrills to Island Peak, which is also called Imjatse Himal. The peak is tagged as an Island due to its unique location, placed amidst beautiful Imjatse Valley. Island Peak towers high above 6,160 m /20,205 feet, surrounded by giant peaks of Lhotse, Lhotse Shar, Nuptse, and Amphu-Labtsa. Includes majestic Ama Dablam and arrays of peaks, regarded as one of the most exciting peaks to climb. 
 
Island Peak is a trekking peak, as listed by NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association), which is also an introduction for beginners. 

A perfect peak for climbers and mountaineers as practice climb provides good exercise, before planning major expeditions.
 
Island Peak Climbing, for the past few decades, has become one of the most popular trekking peaks for adrenaline adventure climb. The success rate is high than other major peaks around Nepal Himalayas. Himalayan Forever Treks have set the climbing grade as PD + means ‘Per Difficult’. The grading systems used are from French / Swiss Alpine Climbing Classification Systems. Which is popular and widely used worldwide, for Alpine-style climbs of a day or little more.
 
Adventure to Island Peak begins with an exciting short flight from Kathmandu to land at Lukla's unique Tenzing & Hillary Airport. The walk leads from Lukla following on the main trail through lovely Sherpa villages festooned with Buddhist prayer monuments. Then enter the Sagarmatha National Park, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site enriched with exotic flora and fauna.
 
The trail from the park leads to cross-over bridges past Jorsalle and then reaches the high last bridge. Following an undulating winding up to the famous Namche Bazaar the hub of Khumbu villagers, and trekkers. 
Almost a size of a town with many good lodges, restaurants, pubs, and bakeries, facing close views of Kwangde peak. Enjoy a rest day with a short scenic hike for acclimatization, before heading higher towards Everest base camp and Island Peak. 
 
From Namche Bazaar, head towards a beautiful spot of Tengboche and the majestic colorful monastery, situated amidst a beautifully scenic location. Enjoying time at Tengboche facing a superb panorama of the surrounding high major peaks of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The adventure leads onwards towards higher ground, where tree lines stop for mountain wilderness with closer views of snow peaks. 

The walk is not difficult except for the rise in altitude as the air gets thinner reaching Pheriche and Lobuche settlements. 
 
Finally, the trail leads to our first destination at Everest base camp amidst remorseless fields of moraine, ice, and glaciers. A dramatic location of arctic landscapes, close to Khumbu Ice-fall, Mt. Everest lies hidden 
between Lhotse and Nuptse peaks. After an exciting time, a steep climb takes you to the top Kalapathar rocky ridge. The best spot for closet grand views of 
Mt. Everest as well the highest point of trekking. Overlooking the tremendous scenery of giant peaks that surround the top of Kalapathar, after a glorious morning.
 
The walk leads towards our main final highlight reaching Island Peak base camp, after walking through Dingboche and Chukung settlements. Located at the far end of beautiful Imjatse valley, from Chukung into the sheer wilderness, away from the main trekking trails. At the Island base camp with ample time for climbing preparation, and then getting ready for the big day. Following our lead and expert guide climbing on ice, and snow and avoiding deep crevices, encountering some technical sections.
 
Where all climbers will be supported by the main and fixed rope, using all the energy for the last push. Then reaching on top of Island Peak summit, surrounded by an array of giant mountains. Includes close views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse with Makalu, Baruntse Himal, and Ama Dablam, feeling in high spirits.
 
Descent safely to base camp and continue the return journey to Lukla, walking past Chukung and Dingboche to Namche Bazaar. 
After a long day, reaching Lukla for the last overnight stop around Khumbu and Everest region. A swift sweeping flight brings you to a low country at Ramechap at Manthali airport or direct to Kathmandu. Depending upon the seasons and air traffic rules, eventually, reach back into the hustle, and bustle city of Kathmandu.
 
Enjoy the last final day in Kathmandu, after memorable and exciting activities on the Island Peak Climbing adventure.

Please Note:
The flight to Lukla and vice-versa has been shifted to Manthali Town Airport at Ramechap district till further notice as per Nepal Civil Aviation Authority. 
To Ramechap, Manthali airport, a drive of 4-5 hours to and from Kathmandu on B.P. Highway distance of 154 k.m. Sometimes the flight to and from Lukla can get delayed or postponed for the next morning. Due to unfavorable weather conditions which is normal around Himalayan mountainous region. If these situation occurs, the company will make the best effort to ease the inconvenience of the clients.

Best Seasons:
Nearly months of the year, except for monsoon wet months of mid-June to mid-September. The best seasons are spring and autumn / fall, the spring time begins from March to May and autumn from September to November.
Interested people can enjoy the trek during winter times of Christmas and New Year Holidays, however much cold temperatures. But most days are bright and clear with sunshine, short daylight hours during autumn and winter times.

Trip Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu, Nepal International Airport our guide and staff will meet you with traditional welcome. After knowing the staff of Himalayan Forever Treks, a short drive to your hotels. Located in the heart of a city within an exciting Thamel area, an interesting place where most good hotels and restaurants situated. Reaching at the hotel, check your lovely rooms, after getting refreshed join in for group briefing. Provided by your guide or Group Leader, offers useful and important information of the treks, climbs, hotels and local lodge. 

Includes details of the local culture with do’s and don’ts, evening a group welcome dinner in a nice Nepali Restaurants.

Morning after breakfast, our city and cultural guide meets the group at the hotel for exciting tour. The drive leads in the heart of Kathmandu city, where interesting historical Durbar Square / Palace Courtyard located. The right spot to observe Nepalese cultures. Tour of ancient monuments listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, next tour takes you to old Swyambhunath Stupa of more than 2,600 years history.  A Buddhist monument situated on a hillock west of Kathmandu city outskirt, the famous landmark of the country. From here back to hotel for lunch, and the get ready for exciting scenic drive to Manthali town at Ramechap district for overnight halt. The next morning taking a short flight to Lukla.

Morning transfer to Manthali town small airport for panoramic flight to Lukla, board in a small aircraft. The flight heads east with stunning views of Himalayan peaks facing Mt. Everest, as the plane makes a smooth exciting landing at Lukla Tenzing & Hillary Airport.

A moderate town, where walk starts heading down to Dudh Koshi River valley through several Sherpa villages. Festooned with prayer flags, Buddhist monument and prayer wall then reaching our first overnight stop at Phakding village.

A long today’s walk to Namche Bazaar, morning after breakfast the trail follows on moderate path. Walking short down and ups crossing a long bridge to reach a nice village of Monjo. The enter Sagarmatha National Park; (Sagarmatha a name for Everest in Nepal, while the native Sherpa calls as Chomolungma of Tibetan origin language). From the park entrance cross another bridge over the same river Dudh Koshi to Jorsalle, the last settlement before Namche Bazaar. Stopping for lunch, afternoon walk on river bed amidst lovely forest, then starts the climb on crossing a high bridge. A steep winding for few hours reaches Namche Bazaar for two overnight halt in the comfort of nice lodge.

An ideal spot Namche Bazaar for rest day to support acclimatization and short hike to view-points. Morning having breakfast facing views of Kwangde and Thamersarkhu peaks, while at Namche there are several side hikes.

Suggested scenic places for hikes around Namche and beyond:Visit the park museum on top of Namche Bazaar, offers interesting information of the Khumbu Sherpa’s cultures. Along with panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamersarkhu and Kantega with Kwangde peaks. 

Hike to Everest View Hotel at above 3,880 m high a refreshing spot for views of Mt. Everest, while having warm cup of hot drinks. For energetic people can enjoy longer hike to Khumjung and Khunde villages, located on a glacial valley.

Rest of the day enjoy leisure afternoon browsing the streets of Namche Bazaar full of shops, stores, restaurants and fresh bakeries. 

Then down to Imjatse River for lunch in a small settlement Phunki-Tenga, amidst beautiful rhododendron and pine forest.

Afternoon two hours climb to beautiful Tengboche and the monastery, a picturesque ridge and a small plateau. Enjoy grand panorama of Everest and surrounding giant snow peaks with time to visit the monastery interior of great religious and cultural interest. Overnight at Tengboche or little further down to Deboche in a quiet surrounding in the midst of woods.  

After a pleasant time at Tengboche or lower at Deboche, amidst glorious views of Mt. Everest and majestic Ama Dablam. Walk down to Imjatse River and cross a bridge from here tree lines stops for short alpine bush and shrubs. 

From the bridge, a gradual climb to Pangboche village, which is the last permanent village on route Everest base camp. From Pangboche heads up to Somare for possible lunch break, a small settlement with few nice simple lodges and restaurants. Enjoy close views of Mt. Ama Dablam, after lunch a few hour walk to Pheriche valley. Heading with slow, easy climb to a point where trail diverts of Pheriche and Dingboche routes. A short uphill to a ridge and then down to a river, and up reaching a wide valley of Pheriche. A scenic settlement with number of good lodges, and guesthouses for overnight halt.

Overlooking grand views of Taboche, Cholatse and Ama Dablam North Face with series of peaks. Enjoy the cozy comfort of nice lodge at Pheriche having time to explore around, where HRA (Himalayan Rescue Association) post located.

Another free day in Pheriche, a lovely place for short morning hike to Nakarjung hill above Pheriche and Dingboche. The top offers grand vista of surrounding snow mountain range with views of Island Peak and Mt. Makalu. Afternoon at leisure to explore around Pheriche, afternoon can be very windy at Pheriche. 

After an enjoyable rest day at Pheriche, adventure continues walking on a wide Pheriche valley. The trail follows short steep up and then on gentle up to Thugla. Where route of Dingboche and Pheriche joins to Everest base camp, Thugla a small settlement having few tea-houses and lodges. A possible lunch stop time permitting, afternoon walk with steep climb to Thugla ridge top. After a refreshing rest, the walk follows on gradual path to Lobuche, located on a corner of a wide valley. Lobuche houses number of nice, good lodges with grand views of Nuptse peak.

An exciting day to Everest Base Camp, morning starts for the long day with fresh cool morning. The trail follows up and then walk on a rocky moraine, above Khumbu glaciers. After few hour of steady hike reaching Gorakshep, a small settlement located on a valley below high Kalapathar hill. Facing close views of Mt. Pumori, enjoy a short refreshing break and then continue walk over rocks and boulders. Then reaching Everest base camp, enjoy the dramatic scenery of arctic landscapes. The base camp, can be busy and active during mountaineering expedition season of late spring. Standing within remorseless fields of ice, snow and glaciers with massif Khumbu Ice Fall. The views of Mt. Everest is not visible, blocked by Lhotse and Nuptse peaks. Achieving our first highlight of the adventure, return to Gorakshep for overnight stop, after a long exciting day. 

Start the morning, early as possible a big climb to Kalapathar a rocky hill top. After a strenuous uphill, and then reach the highest point of the trek before the climb of Island Peak. Kalapathar is a famous, popular scenic ridge among trekkers and adventurers. For breathtaking panorama of giant peaks that surrounds Kalapathar high hill top, with close views of Mt. Everest. After completing the first part of the adventure, descend to Gorakshep for breakfast. From here towards Chukung for Island Peak climb, walk downhill to Lobuche and Thugla.After Thugla our route diverts to Imjatse Valley at Dingboche, as walk continues towards Dingboche for possible lunch stop. Afternoon walk leads further east facing close views of Island peak, a pleasant walk but quite windy and cold.

Walking for few hours to reach Chukung, a small settlement having good lodges within close to giant peaks of Lhotse and Nuptse. At Chukung transfer in a nice small simple lodge for last overnight in a lodge before the climb of Island Peak.

Morning from Chukung, walk towards our main highlight of the adventure for Island Peak climb. The walk leads away from main trail, climb up and down on rocky dunes of moraine. 

After few hours of good walk reach Parsya Gyab, which is near Island Peak Base Camp. Our camping staff will set the camp close to a snout of Imja glacier, and dry pond in-between Lhotse and Imja glaciers. Rest of the afternoon check the climbing gear required for the climb, enjoy relaxing afternoon amidst stunning scenery of giant peaks.

Full rest day at base camp for acclimatization, preparation for the climb to Island Peak. Morning our expert guide will provide information of the climb and technical sections to encounter. Knowing the use of climbing gears, as well with practice exercise, on ice and rocky ledges near base camp.

Afternoon relax save the energy for next tough days, collecting information from our expert guide.

Walk further from the base camp to establish a high camp to make the climb shorter and accessible. Normally most climbers makes to the summit from the base camp. But Himalayan Forever Treks adding extra high camp to make the climb easier, safe and accessible to reach the summit. 

Leaving base camp, carrying only necessary gears required for the climb, then head for over rocks and ice. Crossing icy streams, reaching a small flat areas beneath the Island Peak. The high camp is set for the final summit bid, rest of the afternoon preparation, as well checking the route of the climb.

Start as early as possible before break of dawn, having light breakfast and follow our lead guide. The route leads to cross over a glacier, heeding slowly with care avoiding crevasses. As actual climb continues heading over snow filled scree of smaller rocks in-between a glacier towards a high ridge.

Climb leads across a technical sections over rocks and icefall of steep deep snow and ice ramp. The climb will be supported by a main / fixed ropes for the last steep climb above 100 meters to reach the summit. Finally all the hard effort turns into a joyful triumph on stepping on top of Island Peak.

Catch your breath and enjoy the stunning views of giant towering peaks that surrounds the summit of Island Peak.

Overlooking close views of Everest, Lhotse with Nuptse and Lhotse Shar towards north. Includes stunning views of Makalu in the east with Baruntse Himal, Amphu Labtsa and Ama Dablam peaks.

After a jaw-dropping views, return with slow and safe descent using the same route to base camp. At the camp enjoy a refreshing rest and warm drinks with last overnight in tented camp. 

At the base camp collect the garbage and carry to proper disposal site, leaving the camp clean and pristine as it was. From the base camp few hours walk to Chukung having lunch along with grand views walk past Dingboche. The trail leads down to a river and then short climb, as walk leads downhill to Pangboche for overnight stop with close view of Mt. Ama Dablam. 

From Pangboche walk is much easier as altitude drops every hour, head down to a river to cross a bridge. A long climb through forest then reaching Tengboche for short stop. Walk continues downhill to cross another bridge with short climb up to Sanasa village. Which is the junction of Namche, Khumjung and Gokyo route, from here a lovely walk of few hours to Namche Bazaar for overnight halt. 

Last day trek of the adventure, morning leads to long descent to Dudh Koshi River, and then few short down and ups to Monjo. Cross the long suspension bridge to Phakding for lunch. Afternoon walk from Phakding retracing the same route with last final climb to Lukla for last overnight stop.

Having early breakfast, a short walk to Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary airport as plane arrives from Ramechap or Kathmandu. Board on a small aircraft for swift short flight to land at Manthali small airstrip. After a pleasant and exciting flight, taking a scenic interesting drive back at Kathmandu. Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities and shopping souvenirs of Nepal. 

Reserved as contingency day, in case of flight delay or cancelation in Lukla due to unfavorable weather condition. Can happen sometimes, if all goes well as per the schedule of our itinerary days. Enjoy the leisure day, relaxing with fond memories of Everest base camp trek. Interested people can join for another tour to Patan and Bhaktapur, worth a visit not to be missed.

Last day in Nepal and at Kathmandu, get ready for final departure as per your international flight time. Himalayan Forever Trek guide and staff transfer you to the airport. Bidding farewell to the guide and staff as you depart for homeward bound flight, after a wonderful experience and great adventure on Island Peak Climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

160 k.m. or 99.5 miles, aerial distance from Kathmandu to Mt. Everest or its base camp. But on walks from Lukla to Everest base camp is 62 k.m. or 38.5 miles one-way.

The trek itself is not too tough or difficult, the walking path are well defined having several nice lodges and settlements. The only hardest is walk fast on high altitude, where one should take it slowly having rest to enjoy the walk each day. The toughest is the climb to high Kalapathar Hill top just for few hours.

As for Island Peak, leads to straightforward climb with some few technical sections to negotiate. Where our guide will take care and supports you on tough difficult areas, as well using fixed ropes. Making ledges on snow and ice to make accessible path and the route to the summit top. Downhill after the climb is equally tough, where all climbers needs to heed cautiously after the successful climb to the summit of Island peak. 

On booking for all trekking peaks, including Island Peak. Himalayan Forever Treks will send the list of climbing gear required for the climb. The list is attached below for all interested climbers, if in doubt please contact us.

Everest villages and settlements have hydroelectricity or solar power, where trekkers can charge electronic items. A fee is charged for each gadgets as per hour basis, the price differs from one place to another. But from Chukung to Island Peak base camp, without electricity or solar power for few nights only.

Interested people can carry portable solar panel for personal use at Island Peak base camp.

Everest region of Khumbu area offers best lodge or hotel accommodation with comprehensive food menu to choose from. From Lukla onwards till Gorakshep several options from budget, moderate to luxury standard.

Trekkers can enjoy rooms with attached bath / toilets, but higher region the toilets and bathe are common. Foods are served in a large warm dining room, the foods served as per the menu from Continental, Chinese, Indian, Tibetan and Nepali. Some lodge restaurants also serves fresh homemade bakeries products.

The most famous and popular is Nepali Dal / Bhat (boiled or steam rice, served with various lentil soups, vegetable or meat mild curry, includes pickles of choice).
