Upper Mustang is a land beyond the majestic Himalayas standing on the edge of Tibetan Plateau. Its undisturbed century-old socio-cultural customs, historically significant archeological sites, and stunning landscapes across the rain shadow region is no less than heaven. Upper Mustang is an ancient forbidden kingdom which has long been a protected area cut off from the outside world. This is why travelling to Upper Mustang takes you back in time.  The height of Upper Mustang ranges from 3,050m (10,004ft) near Chele to 6,700m (22,000ft) in Khamjung Himal. You will reach the highest overnight stay of the journey atLo Manthang, which is 3,730m/12,235ft.

The majority of the route to the Upper Mustang road trip is well-paved and safe.  The Upper Mustang overland trip travels along the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, and reaches to Kagbeni. We pass several notable landmarks on route, including Tatopani Natural Hot Springs, Marpha Village, often known as "The Apple Garden," Kagbeni, a site of religious pilgrimage, and the Lo-Manthang. 

Starting in Kathmandu, the route takes a private jeep ride to Pokhara before heading to Lo-Manthang. The total road distance from Kathmandu to Pokhara is 200 KM, Pokhara to Jomsom is 155 km and Jomsom to Lo Manthang is 60 km. It is a wonderful journey with lovely mountain views and a variety of landscapes. After having breakfast in Kathmandu, you will travel quite a distance to the city of lakes, Pokhara. The initial part of the journey starts along the Prithvi Highway, and you'll be driving next to the Trishuli river. Since the majority of the road is blacktopped, there are only a few rough curves. As you get closer to Pokhara city, the views of mountains and hills, including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhare, the five peaks of Annapurna, and others, become clearer. 


After reaching Pokhara, you will drive to the lakeside town and move into a hotel. You may enjoy the evening strolling around the stunning Phewa Lake and the town itself. Nightlife in Pokhara is just magical.

Lo Manthang portrays the rich Tibetan Buddhist traditions and culture. You will first go to Namgyal Gompa monasteries which are close to the 2,500 year old Jhong Caves. The five-story King's Palace, constructed in the 1400s, can also be visited to learn about the history of Lo Manthang. After a few hours of driving from Lo Manthang, you will return to Kagbeni, a beautiful local village in Mustang. Then, you will visit Muktinath temple, one of the most sacred places for Hindus and Buddhists. The temple has an energetic atmosphere and brings peace inside you. There are two small ponds and numerous spring taps, and it is believed that their water could wash away past sins committed.
